Things to do on the Costa Blanca in winter

things to do on the costa blanca in winter

As a popular holiday destination, there are many things to do on the Costa Blanca in the summer months, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do when the weather gets colder. In fact, without the high temperatures of summer, the cooler winter months can often be the best time to get out and explore.

Whether you are here in Spain on holiday or are living on the Costa Blanca, if you’re looking for some things to keep you occupied now you can’t spend the days sunbathing, here are some of our favourite things to do on the Costa Blanca in winter…

Stay active

Winter in Spain doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors, quite the opposite in fact as the average temperatures in December and January on the Costa Blanca are around 17° celsius with an average of just 2 days of rain per month.

You can book walking tours and bike tours in Torrevieja, Alicante, Benidorm and many locations in between. These cover all languages and interests and are a great way to see the sights with someone who knows the area well.

If you want to take part in some more adventurous activities, you can sign up to a horse-riding trek, quad bike tour, archery lesson or paintballing at Lo Rufete adventure park just outside San Miguel de Salinas. If watersports are more your thing, why not try your hand at windsurfing, paddleboarding or rowing at Marina Las Dunas in Guardamar del Segura.

Visit museums

There are some great museums on the Costa Blanca with something for everyone, whether you’re interested in history, archaeology, dinosaurs, art or even chocolate!

Many of the museums are free on Sundays but make sure you check the opening times before leaving as these can vary in the winter.

Some museums to add to your list include:

Food and drink

As well as plenty of fantastic restaurants and cafes, there are also lots of fun activities and excursions for any budding foodies.

If you want to know how to cook the perfect Spanish paella, check out the Paella Alicante Experience which includes a trip to Alicante’s Mercado Central to find your ingredients followed by a cookery class.

Meanwhile, if you like your fine wines you will probably enjoy a wine tasting tour around the vineyards of Alicante.

Beach walks

The beaches here definitely aren’t just for summer. With 200km of Mediterranean coastline, there are over 170 beaches to choose from on the Costa Blanca and plenty of places for a lovely walk in the winter sun.

There are sandy beaches, pebbly beaches, palm trees, coves, promenades, and always a beach bar or two to stop at for a drink and some tapas. And if you’re feeling brave it might even still be warm enough for a paddle.

Sightseeing

If you enjoy sightseeing you won’t be disappointed with what the Costa Blanca has to offer.

There are many churches and religious buildings to explore including Iglesia de La Inmaculada Concepcion in Torrevieja, Iglesia de San Jaime y Santa Ana in Benidorm, and The Santa Faz Monastery in Alicante.

If Spanish castles interest you, you have plenty to choose from. One of the most famous is the Santa Bárbara Castle in Alicante which offers amazing views across the beaches, city and port. There is also the Castillo Fortaleza de Santa PolaCastillo de Guardamar, and the Castillo de Sax

The hills and mountains around the area provide some fantastic viewpoints from La Cruz de Benidorm to Guadalest Valley, and you will probably find that during the winter you can enjoy the views without all the crowds.

To see as much of the Costa Blanca coastline as possible you can also get the Alicante tram from the city centre right up to Denia, stopping at lots of great destinations along the way.

Shopping

For something to do on the Costa Blanca on a rainy day why not visit some of the many shopping malls the area has to offer. They are often open until around 10 pm every day (check the times first though) so also provide something to do on the cooler evenings.

Habaneras near Torrevieja and La Zenia Boulevard near Villamartin are both full of popular high street shops as well as bars and restaurants. If you want to grab a bargain you can visit the Outlet Stores in Alicante, and of course, there are weekly markets in every town and village.

We hope this list has given you lots of ideas for things to on the Costa Blanca this winter and has shown you that Spain isn’t just for the summer.
