The best blue flag beaches on the Costa Blanca

Did you know that Spain is the country with the most blue-flag beaches? For the past 33 years in a row, Spain has officially had the best beaches in the world!

There are a total of 590 blue flag beaches in Spain, and with 134 of them located in the Valencian region, and 86 right here in the Alicante province, our region is the locality with the highest quality beaches in the country.

The presence of a Blue Flag on a beach tells you that the beach is of the very highest standard, having met certain criteria regarding the water quality, health and safety, provision of lifeguards, appropriate signage, facilities, equal access for all, and environmental awareness.

With over 200km of beautiful beaches on the Costa Blanca, there are plenty of fantastic blue flag beaches to choose from. We’re also very lucky to have golden sandy beaches on this part of the coast, rather than the stony beaches that are further along the coastline.

So, if you’re looking forward to your next beach day or planning a future trip to Spain, take a look at our list of 5 of the best blue flag beaches on the Costa Blanca…

1. Playa San Juan, Alicante

Starting our list in central Alicante, Play San Juan is 5km long and Alicante’s most famous beach. As well as plenty of golden sand to sunbathe on, here you can play volleyball, beach football, and take advantage of the various water sports on offer. The promenade stretches for miles with a wide range of restaurants, bars, and shops.

2. Playa La Mata, Torrevieja

Torrevieja is home to a total of 7 blue flag beaches so there are plenty to choose from in the area. Playa la Mata is two and a half kilometers long and approximately 50 meters wide, and the biggest beach in Torrevieja. Bordering the Lagunas de la Mata Natural Park, the fine golden sand and sand dunes make this beach a great place to spend a day. There is also a new wooden board walk which will take you to restaurants, bars, and children’s playparks.

3. Playa Centro, Guardamar del Segura

Located in the heart of this seaside town, Playa Centro is the busiest beach in Guardamar del Segura with the widest range of amenities including restaurants, bars, and shops. From here you can walk for miles along the shoreline in both directions, walking all the way to Torrevieja if you’re feeling energetic!

4. Playa la Marina, Elche

With 1.5 kilometres of sand dunes and a vast pine forest, La Marina is one of the most beautiful natural beaches in the area. Here you will find a restaurant and a beach bar, and can also hire beach umbrellas and deckchairs. With a campsite nearby, La Marina is a popular beach for holidaymakers.

This small cove is a great beach to visit if you have children. A sheltered beach between Cabo Roig and La Zenia, it has golden sand and clear shallow water. There is a Chiringuito (beach bar) during the summer months, and also a children’s play park.
